Pope Francis Dies at 88, Marking the End of an Era

The Vatican has announced the passing of Pope Francis, who died at 88 on Monday, April 21, 2025. Known for his reformist stance and outreach to marginalized communities, Pope Francis reshaped the Catholic Church’s approach to global issues and compassion.

“At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father,” said Cardinal Kevin Farrell. “He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with faithfulness, courage, and universal love, especially for the poorest and the marginalized.”

Francis’ death came a day after he appeared in St. Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday, offering blessings from his wheelchair. His passing marks the conclusion of a papacy defined by advocacy for the poor, the environment, and inclusivity within the Church.

World leaders have expressed their grief, with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni calling him “a great man and a great pastor.” French President Emmanuel Macron highlighted his dedication to uplifting the underprivileged.

Pope Francis’ health had declined in recent years due to ailments such as diverticulitis, bronchitis, and pneumonia. Despite his physical struggles, he continued to inspire millions, demonstrating resilience and dedication to his mission.

In accordance with his wishes, Pope Francis is expected to be buried at the Basilica of St. Mary Major, outside the Vatican walls. His body will lie in state at St. Peter’s Basilica, allowing the faithful to pay their last respects.

The Catholic Church will soon enter a conclave, a gathering of cardinals tasked with electing the next pope. This historic process will shape the future of a Church deeply influenced by Francis’ legacy of reform and compassion.
