
Meta, in collaboration with Data Science Africa, has launched the Llama Impact Grant, a new initiative aimed at supporting startups and researchers in Sub-Saharan Africa. This program, part of Meta’s global Llama Impact Grants, is designed to fund projects that utilize Llama AI, Meta’s open-source large language model, to tackle regional challenges.
The Role of AI in Africa’s Development
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is driving productivity, creativity, and economic growth worldwide. In Africa, AI can revolutionize industries such as healthcare, agriculture, and scientific research. To maximize its potential, Meta is calling for proposals from individuals and organizations eager to develop AI-driven solutions using Llama AI.
Eligibility & Evaluation Criteria
To qualify for the Meta Llama Impact Grant, proposals from startups and researchers will be assessed based on:
- A clear and compelling use case for Llama AI.
- A defined path to impact with a large potential user base.
- The expertise and composition of the team.
- Ethical considerations in AI development.
- A realistic budget and timeline.
The winning proposal will receive a $20,000 grant to develop their AI-powered project.
Application Deadline
Interested applicants should submit their proposals via the online application portal before April 18, 2025.

Meta’s Llama AI models, including the latest Llama 3.3, have already been downloaded over a billion times globally. As open-source tools, Llama AI models eliminate barriers associated with commercial AI models, making them accessible to innovators across Africa.
Success Stories from Meta’s Global Initiative
Since launching in October 2023, the Llama Impact Grant program has received over 800 applications from 90+ countries. Notable projects include:
1. Digital Green’s Farmer Chat
A multilingual AI chatbot that provides customized agricultural advice to small-scale farmers. This solution fine-tunes Llama AI on agricultural data, offering region-specific guidance in languages such as Hindi, Swahili, and Kikuyu.
2. Jacaranda Health
Jacaranda Health developed PROMPTS, an AI-powered digital health tool that utilizes SMS behavioral nudges and an AI-enabled clinical helpdesk to support new and expecting mothers in Kenya, Ghana, and Eswatini.
