Apple WWDC 2026: New Siri, iOS 27, and Apple’s Long-Awaited AI Reset
Apple’s biggest software event of the year kicked off today. And for the first time in a while, it feels like the company actually has something to show.
WWDC 2026 is Apple’s attempt to reset its AI story. After years of delays, broken promises, and a Siri that fell far behind rivals, the company is going all in. Here’s everything you need to know.
Siri Is Finally Getting a Real Upgrade
The headline announcement is a completely rebuilt Siri. The new version is powered by Google’s Gemini AI — part of a multi-year deal reportedly worth around $1 billion per year.
What does that mean in practice? Siri can now hold full conversations. It understands the context of what’s on your screen. It can handle multi-step requests in a single go. And it comes with a brand new standalone app that works in both text and voice.
Think of it like ChatGPT or Claude — but built into your iPhone. Tom’s Guide described it as the version of Siri Apple should have shipped two years ago.
You Can Now Choose Your Own AI Assistant
This is a big deal for an Apple product. For the first time, iOS 27 lets you set a third-party AI as your default assistant. That means you can use Claude, Gemini, or ChatGPT instead of Siri for things like Writing Tools and Image Playground.
Apple has historically kept its ecosystem tightly closed. Allowing users to swap out a core feature like this is a significant shift — and a sign that Apple knows it can’t win the AI race on its own.
You can also route specific queries to third-party AI apps installed on your device. Ask Siri something it can’t handle, and it can hand it off to Claude or Gemini directly.
iOS 27: Faster, Cleaner, Smarter
iOS 27 has been described as a “Snow Leopard” update — focused on performance and stability rather than flashy new features. Apple is stripping out old, outdated code to make the OS run faster across all supported devices.
The update also brings expanded AI capabilities into apps like Wallet, Safari, and Shortcuts. The Dynamic Island gets a Siri integration too — triggering it now surfaces a “Search or Ask” prompt with a glowing cursor.
Developer betas are available today. Public betas follow in July, with a full launch expected in the autumn.
macOS 27, iPadOS 27, and More
Every major Apple platform is getting updated. macOS 27 brings the new Siri experience to the Mac. iPadOS 27 adds split-screen multitasking improvements and the same AI upgrades. watchOS and tvOS also get minor updates, though details are still emerging from the keynote.
Hardware announcements were limited today. Supply chain constraints have pushed back potential Mac Mini and Mac Studio upgrades, so the focus stayed firmly on software.
Why This Matters
Apple has about 1.5 billion active devices in the world. When it ships an AI update, the scale is enormous.
The Gemini-powered Siri is Apple’s admission that it couldn’t build a competitive AI assistant alone. It’s also a sign of where the industry is heading — even the world’s most valuable company needs a partner to stay in the AI race.
This is also expected to be one of Tim Cook’s final major keynotes before a new CEO takes over. If today’s announcements land well with users and developers, it could be a strong way to close a chapter — and open a new one for the next era of Apple Intelligence.
