Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has died in a tragic car accident in Spain at the age of 28, just weeks after marrying his longtime partner. The crash also claimed the life of his brother, André Silva.
The accident occurred around 12:30 a.m. on Thursday near Cernadilla in northern Spain, close to the Portugal border. According to Spanish authorities, the vehicle suffered a tire blowout while overtaking, veered off the road, and burst into flames. Both occupants were pronounced dead at the scene.
Jota, a key figure in Liverpool’s recent successes, had been with the club since 2020 after transferring from Wolverhampton Wanderers. He played a major role in Liverpool’s 2024/25 Premier League title win, contributing six goals in 26 league matches. His sudden death sent shockwaves through the football community.
Liverpool FC described Jota’s passing as an “unfathomable loss,” with fans gathering at Anfield to lay flowers, scarves, and jerseys in tribute. The club also lowered its flag in mourning.
Born in Porto, Portugal, as Diogo José Teixeira da Silva, he rose through the ranks of Portuguese football before making his mark in the Premier League. He earned 49 caps for Portugal’s national team and scored 24 goals, with his last appearance being a Nations League victory over Spain in June.
Jota had recently married his longtime girlfriend, Rute Cardoso, on June 22. They shared three children. His brother André Silva was also a professional footballer, playing for Penafiel in Portugal’s second division.
Cristiano Ronaldo, Jota’s teammate on the national team, expressed his sorrow on social media, writing, “Just now we were together… just now you were married.”
