Google Maps has updated the name of the “Gulf of Mexico,” now referring to it as the “Gulf of America” for users in the United States. This follows an executive order by President Donald Trump that officially renamed the body of water as recognized by the U.S. government.
The change is specific to users in the U.S., while users in Mexico will continue to see the original name, “Gulf of Mexico.” For users in other regions, both names will be displayed.
The name change stems from an executive order issued by Trump on his first day in office. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum confirmed the update on Sunday, tweeting, “It’s official!” after the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) adjusted the official designation.
Google also confirmed the update in a statement: “As we announced two weeks ago and consistent with our longstanding practices, we’ve begun rolling out changes to reflect this update.”
The company reiterated its policy of adopting name changes based on official government sources, ensuring its maps stay aligned with updated geographic standards.
