1x Develops Humanoid Robot NEO Gamma for Home Assistance

AI company 1x has unveiled NEO Gamma, a humanoid robot designed to handle household chores as a versatile and autonomous home assistant. This new model is an upgrade from its predecessor, NEO Beta, boasting significant advancements. Among its innovative features are Emotive Ear Rings that light up when the robot listens to its owners. NEO Gamma mimics a natural human gait with arm swings, allowing it to perform tasks such as squatting to pick up objects, sitting in chairs, and carrying grocery bags. To enhance its human-like appearance, the robot is dressed in a knit suit crafted by the 1x design team.

A Human-Like Look and Feel

The humanoid robot’s metallic frame is concealed under a 3D-printed soft nylon knit suit, created using a Japanese Shimaseki machine. This design not only gives NEO Gamma a more “clothed” look but also prevents it from damaging fragile objects around the home. The robot’s advanced design incorporates an in-house language model that enables it to engage in natural conversations and express body language. Currently, the AI company is preparing to send the prototype into a home for internal testing.

Mimicking Human Movements and Learning

NEO Gamma’s control system operates at 100 Hz, developed through reinforcement learning and human motion capture data. This enables the robot to move and behave similarly to humans. It can recognize and interact with household objects, even in unfamiliar environments. Through human control and teleoperation, the robot learns by observing how people perform tasks and replicating them.

Advanced AI Voice Interaction

Equipped with a built-in voice assistant, NEO Gamma allows users to communicate naturally without pressing any buttons. Thanks to its in-house language model, the robot’s responses feel authentic and conversational. The design team has also reduced the robot’s noise levels by 10 dB, making it as quiet as a humming refrigerator. It features four microphones with echo cancellation for clear audio capture and three strategically placed speakers: one in the chest for voice interactions and two near the pelvis for bass, 360-degree sound effects, and streaming music.

Features That Enhance Usability

  • Natural Movements: NEO Gamma’s ability to walk with a human-like gait and perform tasks such as squatting and sitting sets it apart from conventional robots.
  • Durable Knit Suit: The robot’s knit suit not only adds a human-like touch but also protects it from bumping into delicate objects.
  • Voice and Sound: The advanced sound system enhances interaction and entertainment capabilities.

Currently, 1x has not announced a timeline for when NEO Gamma will be tested in real homes, but the prototype’s development marks a significant step toward practical humanoid robots for everyday use.
