Instagram is enhancing its social features with several new tools, including the long-awaited Instagram repost button, an interactive Instagram Map, and a dedicated Friends tab in Reels. These updates aim to make the platform more dynamic, social, and engaging ahead of its 15th anniversary.
Repost Button Introduces Native Sharing for Reels and Posts
The new Instagram repost button lets users easily reshare public posts and reels—similar to the retweet on X (formerly Twitter). Until now, Instagram lacked a built-in reposting option, leading users to rely on third-party apps or screenshots.
Reposted content appears in both followers’ feeds and a new Reposts tab on the user’s profile, creating a separate space to view shared content. Instagram has added a creative twist by allowing users to include short notes above reposts—much like quote tweets.
Most importantly, reposts retain the original creator’s username, ensuring proper credit is given and expanding reach for content creators.
Instagram Map Brings Location-Based Social Discovery
Inspired by Snapchat’s Snap Map, Instagram is launching an interactive map to showcase geotagged content like posts, stories, and reels. Users can now explore what’s happening in their area or around the world via this feature, which is accessible from the top of the DM inbox.
You can choose to share your location with close friends or a custom list, and Instagram has added parental controls for teens to manage their privacy settings.
Friends Tab in Reels Enhances Social Engagement
Another new addition is the Friends tab in Reels, designed to surface content that your friends have liked, commented on, or reposted. This shared discovery space allows users to engage with each other’s preferences more meaningfully and makes scrolling a collaborative experience.
