Apple Just Launched the New Mac Mini With M6, Weeks Before Its September Event

Apple just surprised everyone. This morning, the company quietly announced a new Mac mini lineup, weeks ahead of its expected September even, and opened pre-orders immediately. It ships September 22.

The new Mac mini comes with two chip options, the all-new M6 or the M5 Pro, and delivers a dramatic performance jump across the board. This is the first Mac mini update in almost two years. And the chip powering the base model is genuinely new territory for Apple.

Meet the M6: Apple’s First 2nm Chip

The headline upgrade is the M6 — Apple’s first 2nm processor, delivering “world’s fastest single-threaded performance” and enhanced AI processing. Moving from 3nm to 2nm is a significant generational jump. More transistors on a smaller die means better performance per watt, less heat, and more headroom for the Neural Engine that powers AI features.

The M6 chip is equipped with a 12-core CPU and a 12-core GPU, up from a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU in the M5 chip. In addition, the M6 chip features the first-ever dual Neural Engine with two 16-core engines, up from one in previous chips. The M6 chip has up to 170GB/s memory bandwidth, up from 153GB/s for the M5 chip.

That dual Neural Engine is the most important technical detail for anyone thinking about AI workloads. With M6, Mac mini now delivers up to 4x faster AI performance, 2x faster storage and graphics, and 40% faster CPU performance compared to the previous M4 model. For developers running local AI models — LLMs, image generation, on-device inference — those numbers matter a great deal.

The M5 Pro Option: For Heavier Work

The Mac mini lineup now splits into two tiers. The base M6 model handles everything most users need. The M5 Pro tier steps up significantly for professional workloads.

There are two M5 Pro configurations available, including one with a 15-core CPU and a 16-core GPU, and another with an 18-core CPU and a 20-core GPU. These are the same M5 Pro chips already shipping in other Mac models this year, tested, mature, and extremely capable for demanding tasks like video production, 3D rendering, and software compilation.

Apple kept the new M6 and M5 Pro Mac mini at three external displays but increased the maximum refresh rate, and gave M5 Pro support for connecting all three through one Thunderbolt port. That’s a connectivity upgrade that matters for professionals running multi-display setups.

Price and Storage: What Changed

In the US, the M6 model starts at $899, while the M5 Pro model starts at $1,699. The previous M4 Mac mini started at $599 before a price increase earlier this year pushed it to $799. So the M6 model is $100 more expensive than the M4 model was at its most recent price point.

Apple discontinued the 256GB Mac mini in May 2026, making 512GB SSD the new entry-level configuration. Storage doubling at the base tier is a genuine improvement — and necessary given how much space local AI models and modern applications demand. The higher starting price stings a little, but the storage upgrade and chip generational jump make the value proposition reasonable for most buyers.

Why Apple Is Launching in August

Apple almost never launches Macs in August. Its annual product calendar typically clusters hardware around October and the spring. In an uncharacteristic August launch, Apple retained the same design, added the M6 and M5 Pro processors, and set a new record-high starting price.

Several factors likely pushed the timing earlier. The Mac mini’s popularity has continued to grow, particularly among developers and enthusiasts running local AI workloads. Its compact design, unified memory architecture, and relatively affordable price have made it an attractive platform for local LLM development, further contributing to inventory shortages. Getting new stock in front of that audience quickly, before competitors launch rival products — made August a logical window.

There’s also a strategic dimension. It’s certain to be among Tim Cook’s last product launches as CEO before Apple’s expected leadership transition. Launching a strong Mac mini lineup gives Apple momentum heading into its September iPhone event. Should You Buy One?

If you’ve been waiting to upgrade from an M1 or M2 Mac mini, or from an Intel model, this is an easy yes. The performance jump is substantial, the form factor is unchanged, and 512GB base storage addresses one of the most common complaints about the previous model.

If you already own an M4 Mac mini, the calculus is harder. For most users, the M4 is still an excellent machine. The M6’s 4x AI performance improvement is compelling for developers doing on-device AI work, but for general productivity, video calls, and everyday computing, you won’t feel a dramatic difference in daily use.
