The escalating Trump Musk fallout took a dramatic turn as former President Donald Trump warned of “serious consequences” should Elon Musk fund Democratic candidates opposing Republican lawmakers.
In a phone interview with NBC News, Trump declined to specify the nature of these consequences but emphasized that such actions would not go unchallenged.
The president also addressed the recent public fallout between himself and Musk, stating he has no plans to mend their relationship. “I assume it’s over,” Trump remarked, adding that Musk’s behavior had been “disrespectful” to the presidency.
The tension between the two escalated earlier this week when Musk criticized the GOP’s budget bill and launched pointed remarks about Trump on social media. Musk deleted some of his posts, including one suggesting Trump should be impeached and another criticizing the president’s tariff policies.
In response, Trump suggested terminating federal contracts held by Musk’s companies, such as SpaceX, though he admitted he hasn’t pursued the idea further. He also accused Musk of benefiting greatly from his administration’s support in the past, expressing disappointment over the tech mogul’s criticism.
Vice President JD Vance weighed in during a podcast interview, describing Musk’s actions as “nuclear” and a potential point of no return. However, Vance suggested that Musk’s frustrations might stem from the complexities of navigating Washington’s bureaucracy.
Despite the controversy, Trump maintained confidence that the GOP’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” would secure Senate approval, framing Musk’s opposition as inadvertently strengthening support for the legislation.
